So… this is happening.
As I approach my retirement from my day job and transition to full-time writing, I have thoughts. I don’t know how successful this will be. I’m hoping for some change, at least - change is good, and as I examine my life in the second half I’ve come to some realizations about myself, about my place in the world, and how I want to hopefully be remembered.
That sounds way too fucking dire. This will not be that. This will not be a place for me to dump my depression onto my readership. I have Twitter for that. Instead, I want to talk about movies, but more than movies. That’s probably what most people will want to read about, and I don’t know if I’ll have anything groundbreaking to say, but I’ll do my best to enlighten and entertain. After twenty years or so, I think I’m pretty good at looking at a movie and breaking it down, and keeping it personal while also being objective. It’s not for me to decide, of course, but for you. And I hope you come along. Bring a friend. Stay a bit. I’ve got snacks. Well, not really, but there is the potential of snacks.
Some of these will have a paywall. Some will not. This one, for example, will not. But while I’m shaking my tin can a little bit (I’m still trying to figure out how to make money from writing, so every bit counts), be assured that my subscription will be no more than $5 a month. I figure that’s what my musings are worth - you don’t have to buy me dinner, but a cup of coffee with Splenda and creamer? I’m worth that.
In the next few days, I’ll be adding content. I’ll talk cinema. I’ll talk life. God help me, I’ll try not to talk too much about politics, but it will likely sneak in there. What I want to create here is a quieter, more contemplative place for you to read about pop culture, television, movies, books, music, and games without the pressure of constant bombardment, which is how I feel about most media these days. I’ll still be writing reviews for whatever venue decides to have me - Vital Thrills has been good to me, and hopefully I will be able to expand from that with more sites in the future. Believe it or not, I’m going to be using this new time constructively. My wife remains unconvinced, so help convince her, would you? It helps me to know that I’ll have a readership to get up to every morning, and it helps to have an audience to write for.
In the meantime, you can find me at Vital Thrills, or Matinee Heroes, my podcast I share with Craig Price, or on Twitter under @AlanWCerny. I hope you’ll join me. Hell, I hope I’ll join me.
